On my research I've saved "good" and "bad" infographics examples and now I'll analyse them to find out why they pleased (or not) me.
Let's start with the ones I liked:
What all of them have in common?
✅Visually appealing
✅Easy to understand
✅Respect basic graphic design principles (fonts, colour scheme, layout, alignments)
✅ It is kind of interactive (especially the Harry Potter one, there is no logical sequence, you can choose any part to start and it will make sense - if you are a potterhead of course..)
✅ Have a single theme and all elements are connected to it
✅ Don't rely simply on data visualisation and when they do, it is presented on a different way (like the bone icon to represent how many people died in each horror movie - bottom left example)
✅ Deliver something: Harry Potter - all the most common spells, what they do and curiosities Horror Franchises - numbers and comparisons within top 10 films
Deadpool - bunch of information showing the success of Deadpool X-Men - explains the really confusing X-men timeline, which is hard if you are a fan - I literally tried to draw it up myself after watching "Days of Future Past" couple of years ago.. and here is the proof:
Now.. let's see the ones that didn't really appeal to me:
Ok. so they are also about movies I really like so no negative influence on that.
Starting with the Pulp fiction:
Is it Visually appealing? ❌ hun.. not really.
Easy to understand? ❌hell no! lol
Basic graphic design principles? ❌too many colours and it's not even the film colour scheme
It is kind of interactive? yes, if you follow the timeline..sure.
Has one single theme and all elements are connected to it? absolutely.
Don't rely simply on data visualisation? yes, I think so..
Deliver something? well.. it does.
Inception:
Is it Visually appealing? ❌ mehh...
Easy to understand? ❌nope!
Basic graphic design principles? ❌not really, fonts sizes and alignments are weird.
It is kind of interactive? yes..you could say that...
Has one single theme and all elements are connected to it? ❌not enough elements!
Don't rely simply on data visualisation? yes, I think so..
Deliver something? well.. it kinda does too..
Mad Max
Is it Visually appealing? Yes!
Easy to understand? Yes!
Basic graphic design principles? Yes!
It is kind of interactive? yes..
Has one single theme and all elements are connected to it? Yes..
Don't rely simply on data visualisation? does not even use data visualisation...
Deliver something? well.. yes..
So why I didn't like this one? I guess because it is too "simple". I mean, it looks good but it's pretty much imagery from the movie with the info presented as basic text. Nothing special.
(if you want to have a look on a range of cool infographics this website is awesome: https://www.infogrades.com/ and allows to grade the infographics by design, informativeness, understandability, and accuracy)
Then I went back to my previous research where I said good Infographics have a narrative, a context.... and although all the above examples have a clear context, their narratives are quite "simple and small". So before I finalise my good x bad analysis I need to share another one - that is not about cinema but (in my view) it is simply brilliant in every single aspect because besides ticking all my "what makes an infographic good" list, it also present a much broader context, using an "analogy" with the iceberg the the famous phrase "the tip of the iceberg" - which works perfectly with the ocean pollution topic.
